Seattle U loses to CS Bakersfield, 83-65

Defense and rebounding have been the bread and butter for Seattle U throughout the Cameron Dollar era. Too often, however, the flavor of the offense has left a bad taste in the mouths of those who have watched the Redhawks lose plenty of winnable games.

Such was the case on Saturday night, when SU dropped an 83-65 decision at Cal State Bakersfield and fell into a three-way tie for fifth place in the WAC.

While the Redhawks outrebounded the Roadrunners 40-32 (with 19 offensive boards) and junior forward Shore Adenekan led the defense with four blocks, Seattle U shot just 35 percent from the field (23-of-64) and 26 percent from three-point range (9-of-34). Only two SU players managed to score in double figures: junior guards Isiah Umipig and Emerson Murray, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Redhawks turned the ball over 18 times.

Seattle U took the lead a couple of times in the first half, but an 11-0 run by Bakersfield helped the Roadrunners go into halftime with a nine-point advantage.

The Roadrunners stretched their lead to 14 early in the second half, but the Redhawks got a spark from the bench -- namely guards D'Vonne Pickett Jr. and Luiz Bidart -- to draw within six points midway through the second half. They would get no closer, however, as Bakersfield pulled away with a 14-2 run and made its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Point guard Issiah Grayson led Bakersfield with 22 points and six assists, while center Aly Ahmed put up 15 points and eight rebounds. Three other Roadrunners scored in double figures.

With the loss, Seattle U fell to 12-12 overall and 4-7 in the conference, tied with Bakersfield and Missouri-Kansas City for fifth place behind Utah Valley, New Mexico State, Grand Canyon and Chicago State.

Seattle U's next game is Thursday, Feb. 20, at home against Grand Canyon. Recommended Stories
